Shropshire Dentist Issues Gum Disease Warning

A Shropshire dentist has urged people to see a dental hygienist on a regular basis after warning that gum disease can be more dangerous than tooth decay.

Dentist, Dr Ashok Jakhu, from Wycherley’s Dental Practice in Newport, warned people that gum disease can be more serious than tooth decay, especially if left untreated for a long period of time and stressed the importance of regular dental check-ups and visits to the hygienist.

Dr Jakhu said gum disease is very common but people tend to think about their teeth, rather than their gums, and this means that symptoms of gum disease can be neglected. Dr Jakhu suggested that people should see a hygienist on a regular basis even if they have strong, healthy teeth to reduce the risk of gum disease, which has been linked to a host of medical problems, from heart disease to diabetes.

He added that almost half of the UK’s adult population is affected by gum disease, which is caused by a build-up of plaque in the mouth, plaque is a combination of food particles and bacteria, which can stick to the surfaces of the teeth.

People are encouraged to be aware of the symptoms of gum disease, such as swollen and sore gums, redness and tenderness in the gums and bleeding when you brush your teeth. Dr Jakhu he also added that this was a perfect time of the year to book an appointment with your hygienist, as most people overindulge over the festive period and focusing on your oral health is a great New Year’s resolution. Dr Jakhu also stressed the importance of brushing twice a day, flossing and avoiding eating too much sugar.
