Shrewsbury Nurse Leaves Dental Practice To Focus On Charity Fundraising

A Shrewsbury nurse has left her job at The Dental Spa to focus on fundraising for charity after her sister tragically died of ovarian cancer.

Wendy Hartwig was working at the dental practice as an aesthetic nurse when her sister, Angela, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Angela, who was 44 years old when she died, was told that she had terminal cancer after suffering from severe abdominal bloating on a holiday abroad with her husband and two children in September 2011. Angela went to hospital when she returned from her holiday and doctors diagnosed ovarian cancer.

Angela and her family were shocked to hear the news, as there is no family history of ovarian cancer and she started chemotherapy treatment straight away; after undergoing surgery and more chemotherapy, last December she was told she had just two weeks to live. She survived until just after Christmas, enabling her to celebrate her daughter’s 14th birthday and watch her children open their Christmas presents, but died just five days before her son’s 5th birthday.

After losing her sister, Wendy decided that she wanted to spend more time with her own children and dedicate her time to raising money for Target Ovarian Cancer Charity. Wendy decided to leave The Dental Spa so that she could take up a more flexible post; she set up her own business and now works as an aesthetic nurse at Skin Deep Shrewsbury, which enables her to choose her own hours and spend more time with her daughters, Sienna and Anya.

Wendy said that Target Ovarian Cancer does extremely important work for people affected by ovarian cancer and she tried to raise as much money as possible to help fund research projects, raise awareness of ovarian cancer and provide support for women who have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and their families.

In October, a group of Angela’s friends and family joined together to raise £4000 for the charity; Angela’s Army took on a 10km hike as part of the national Walk for One Million campaign.
