A dental practice in Shetland will close permanently following the sudden death of dentist, Dr David Lubbe, on January 1st.

Dental Shetland has shut following the unexpected death of Dr Lubbe, who passed away at home on New Year’s Day at the age of 73. Dr Lubbe had just returned from feeding his sheep when he fell ill.

Initially, there were plans to find a locum or a replacement dentist and keep the Lerwick practice open but Dr Lubbe’s widow, Cheryl, has now confirmed that the clinic has closed due to being unable to make alternative arrangements.

Patients who were registered at Dental Shetland have been advised to contact other practices, including Lerwick Dental Practice, Montfield Dental Clinic and the Family Dental Clinic.

Dr Lubbe was born in Namibia. He had worked at the practice in Lerwick for 15 years and was a very popular member of the local community.

Cheryl said that the family has been inundated with kind messages and well wishes since David’s death and she thanked everyone who had reached out for their generosity and the special tributes paid to her late husband. The family has organised a memorial service for Dr Lubbe, which will take place at Lerwick Baptist Church on Saturday January 28th at 1pm. The family has asked for donations to the Fishermen’s Mission rather than flowers. The memorial service will be streamed online to enable friends and family in Namibia to be involved.
