A researcher from the University of Sheffield has been given a prestigious award in recognition for his work on the impact of oral health on heart health.

Professor Martin Thornhill, from the university’s school of dentistry, has been awarded the Distinguished Scientist Award for Oral Medicine and Pathology by the International Association of Dental Research. He was presented with the award at a ceremony in Boston.

The award is given to researchers who have demonstrated excellence in the field of research as well as innovation and commitment. Professor Thornhill’s research focused on the relationship between oral health and heart health and as a result of his findings, there has been a considerable increase in the number of people diagnosed with potentially serious heart infections and a decrease in the use of antibiotics prophylaxis in dentistry.

Professor Thornhill’s study has been described as “groundbreaking” and he was extremely honoured to be given such a prestigious global award.
