Scottish dental nurse shares lip filler horror story to raise awareness of cheap treatment risks

A dental nurse from Glasgow has shared her experience of having cheap lip fillers to raise awareness of the risks involved.

Jenna Maclean, 20, decided to treat herself to lip filler treatment as an early Christmas present last year, but was shocked to find that the £130 deal was too good to be true. After a 15-minute appointment at a local beauty salon, Jenna was left with painful, hard, lumpy lips.

Jenna, a dental nurse, could have had the procedure at her place of work, but was worried that it would come across as though she were trying to take advantage and get a freebie.

In the end, after dealing with bleeding lips and ongoing pain, Jenna’s boss, Dr Rita Poddar, provided remedial treatment, giving Jenna her smile and confidence back.

The cost of lip filler treatment at medical and dental clinics is usually around £500 and this is why many people, particularly young women, choose to have treatment elsewhere.

Beauty salons and independent practitioners often charge a lot less. In Jenna’s case, the treatment was advertised at just £130.

Dentists like Dr Poddar are familiar with botched treatments, and unfortunately, this is a common occurrence when people choose to have cheap treatment.

The industry is largely unregulated and many of the people who administer treatment do not have extensive training or any formal medical or dental qualifications.

When Jenna had treatment, she had a very short consultation and the effects became visible immediately. In a setting, such as a dental clinic, dentists would meet the client, discuss the treatment and procedure at length and carry out an examination to ensure that the customer was a viable candidate for treatment.
