Scottish Dental Care has snapped up a thriving Edinburgh business, adding to its 15 practices in Scotland.

The growing firm has acquired Mathewson Dental Practice, which operates St John’s Road Dental Practice and East Craigs Dental Practice. Both practices provide NHS and private dental care. The business provides care for over 28,000 patients across nine surgeries.

The addition of the practices run by Mathewson Dental Practices is a major step for Scottish Dental Care, with the Edinburgh-based group attracting several offers, most of which were over the asking price.

Hew and Lorna Mathewson launched the business in 1977 and have expanded considerably in the last 35 years. Initially, the practice had one surgery and around 2,500 patients. With the help of their daughter, the couple grew the practice, establishing a thriving dental company in the city. The Mathewsons are now retiring and decided to appoint Christie & Co to oversee the sale.

Mr Mathewson CBE, said that he was “absolutely delighted with the outcome of the sale process.”

Managing director at Scottish Dental Care, Christopher Friel, stated that the acquisition “represents a continuation of our growth plans,” and added that the Scottish Dental Care team is honoured to “take forward the legacy developed by Dr Mathewson.”
