The Saskatchewan government is aiming to improve access to oral health services for children.

Ministers are working to try and improve access to dental care in order to reduce rates of decay and improve standards of oral health among children in the area. There are also plans to improve oral healthcare for pregnant women and mothers with very young children.

Ministers have announced a number of measures to try and boost standards of oral health and new initiatives to be launched in the coming weeks include better access to preventative treatments.

The new initiatives will be trialled in schools in underserved and deprived regions, where children are in need of better services. The programme will then be rolled out to other areas at the beginning of 2012.

Health Minister, Don McMorris, said that many cases of oral health diseases are highly preventable and it is important to invest in preventative services to try and promote good oral health and reduce rates of decay and gum disease among children.
