Salisbury Dental Nurse Joins Volunteer Effort Treating Refugees in Northern Greece

A dental nurse from Salisbury has joined a volunteer effort in Northern Greece. Laura Westbrook, from DBS Larkhill, teamed up with fellow dental professionals to offer much-needed dental treatment in the refugee camps of Northern Greece as part of a project coordinated by Dentaid.

Laura and the team visited the Cherso and Nea Kavala refugee camps, offering basic dental treatment for more than 100 people over the course of just two days. Many of the refugees were suffering from severe dental pain and the aim was to make them feel as comfortable as possible.

She said the experience was an ‘incredible opportunity’ and thanked Dentaid for making it possible. The charity organises projects in poor areas all over the world and provides treatment for people who have no access to even the most basic dental care.

Laura said that the project involved hard work and it was a challenge working in tough conditions. However, it was clear that the efforts of the team made a really positive difference and she was glad to be able to use her skills to benefit people who are going through an incredibly difficult time. The team worked with other chairtable organisations, including the Red Cross, to treat people in temporary clinics in soaring temperatures. Their efforts were incredibly valuable, but sadly, this is only the tip of the iceberg. Thousands of people live in the refugee camps and the demand for basic medical and dental care far outweighs the supply. Dentaid has pledged to continue working in the area over the coming months.
