Children in Sale are brushing up on their oral hygiene habits as part of National Smile Month.

Children from Penguin Pre School in Timperley enjoyed a fun, interactive educational session hosted by the dental team from Maple Road Dental Practice. The team took a host of props, including giant toothbrushes and teeth to help the children, who are aged between 2 and 4 years old, learn how to clean their teeth properly.

Corrie Finn, oral health educator at Maple Road Dental Practice, an award-winning surgery, said that it is important for dental practices to support the National Smile Month campaign, as figures show that 3 out of 10 children starting primary school have signs of tooth decay.

Corrie said that it is important that children understand the benefits of brushing their teeth twice a day from a very early age; regular teeth cleaning, teamed with frequent dental check-ups, helps to reduce the risk of decay and premature tooth loss, which prevents children from suffering unnecessary pain and missing out on valuable classroom time.

That children have an understanding of the impact their diet has on their oral health was also emphasised and she encouraged the kids to steer clear of sugary treats. Then to make sure that they limit the amount of sugar they consume every day. Diet is one of the major causes of high rates of decay among young children in the UK.

During the day, the children took part in interactive sessions, which involved puppets and giant toothbrushes and teeth; the sessions enabled the kids to learn, whilst also having lots of fun and the dental team is hoping that the children learned that going to the dentist can be fun.

Penguin Pre School manager, Jo Richardson, said that the day was a great success and the children had lots of fun, as well as learning important lessons about healthy eating and oral hygiene. She thanked everyone at Maple Road Dental Practice for their time and efforts to make the event a success.
