The Rutherglen United Reformed Church is supporting two dental students as they prepare for a charity mission.

The church has donated £500 to students, Alex Harding and Kyle McLean, from the Glasgow Hospital and School of Dentistry, to help towards the cost of equipment, expenses and travel costs for their upcoming trip to Vietnam and Cambodia.

Alex and Kyle are fourth year students are they are travelling to Vietnam and Cambodia in May as part of their elective training.

Kyle said that during the trip, he will be providing basic dental care to people who have probably never seen a dentist before. Oral health is not a priority in these countries and access to dental services is very poor. He added that the students will be using the knowledge and skills that they have gained over the past few years to try and educate people about oral health and hopefully help them to reduce their risk of suffering from dental pain as well as conditions such as decay and gum disease.

The duo will be working with the Cambodia Tooth Angel project and a charity based in central Vietnam.

Reverend John Sanderson said it was a pleasure to welcome Kyle and Alex to the service last week and to hear all about the plans they have to help out in Vietnam and Cambodia; he also praised them for choosing to help people who live in very poor conditions as part of their elective training and said that everyone at the church wished them well and looked forward to hearing about their travels when they return.
