A dentist in Richmond Hill, Georgia has been shut down and suspended by the state after an investigation into allegations concerning the mishandling of prescriptions for controlled medications and substance abuse. Dr. Alfred B. Roberts III had his practicing license suspended by the state on Friday, according to an Order of Summary Suspension from the Georgia board of Dentistry.

The dental board has made the decision of suspension during a meeting on Thursday, where they determined that Dr. Roberts’ actions, conduct and physical condition ‘posed a thread to the public health, safety and welfare,’ and required ‘emergency action.’

The suspension order stated that the dental board has received information that Dr. Roberts had been abusing controlled substances. It also noted that he was alleged to have been obtaining the controlled substances by writing fraudulent prescriptions using other peoples names, including those of employees and patients. It also stated that he has ordered substances over the internet and that during an interview with law enforcement officials he has appeared impaired, all he while he was still seeing patients.

The decision of a suspension means that Roberts is not allowed to practice dentistry until further proceedings and a hearing before the states Board of Dentistry.
