Rhos-On-Sea Dentists Heading For Sudan

A team of dentists from Rhos-on-Sea, near Conwy, are preparing for a mission to Sudan.

Ken Foxall and his wife, Alison, will be leading a team for a month-long visit to Nzara in South Sudan. The team will spend a month carrying out basic dental procedures and teaching basic dental skills, such as tooth extraction.

Mr Foxall said that there were hardly any dentists in South Sudan, the world’s newest nation. South Sudan was formed after gaining independence from Sudan in 2005 after several years of civil war.

He added that the country was still in the very early stages of development and there was no dental care system in place. The team will participate in a pilot project to assess the current situation and then use the information to decide on a suitable course of action for the future.

Most of the people the team will treat will never have seen a dentist before and many will be suffering from long-term dental pain. Mrs Foxall will fly out to South Sudan first with dental nurse, Georgia Spencer-Williams; she will then be replaced by her husband and nurse, Donna Chatham, after two weeks in order to keep the surgery in Rhos-on-Sea up and running.

The idea for the trip came after a conversation Mr Foxall had with local vicar, Peter Marshall, who will fly out before the Foxalls to find suitable candidates for the dental training project.
