A retired dentist has celebrated his 100th birthday in Penarth.

George Watkeys turned 100 on August 29th 2022. Born to Rachel and Frank Watkeys in Merthyr Tydfil in 1922, George was called up to serve in the RAF after finishing his education at Monkton House School in Cardiff, which later became Kings Monkton School.

During his time in the RAF, George fought in the Second World War and he spent five years stationed in India working as a wireless operator. George fell ill after catching malaria and his parents were informed that he was unlikely to survive. Showing his fighting spirit, George recovered after spending a year in hospital and he returned to the UK.
George returned to education, starting a dental degree in London. He met his wife, Sheilah and the couple married in 1954. George and Sheilah had three sons, one of whom sadly died at the age of 5.

During his career in dentistry, George ran a practice in Rumney, Cardiff and was a popular member of the local community. He also worked as a dental officer for ancillary hospitals in Cardiff, which enabled him to teach and mentor students. George also served as a magistrate in the local area for many years before he retired.

George and Sheilah moved to Penarth in 1998 when George had retired and the couple enjoyed spending time with friends and family and travelling. Sheilah sadly passed away in 2020.

George celebrated his landmark birthday at Morel Court Residential Home surrounded by friends and the staff who have looked after him for six years. The residents enjoyed a special 100th birthday tea party to mark the occasion.
