Resuscitation Doll to Help Dental Students

Sample News Big

Students at the University of Maryland’s School of Dentistry will soon be learning how to react to medical emergencies during dental treatment, using a life-size mannequin called ‘Sim Man.’

Sim Man is the creation of the Laerdal Medical Corp and is able to react to questions asked by the medical students, provide blood pressure and pulse readouts and responses to CPR.

The University has named the training programme ‘Shock Trauma’ which has been created, according to associate professor of anaesthesiology, Thomas Grissom, “to save lives”.

Gary Hack, a director at the School Dentistry was hopeful for the lessons Sim Man could teach the students and said, “ This new program will dramatically improve our students’ ability to respond to medical emergencies and my hope is that we will be able to expand this program to include training on how to screen for diabetes.”

Sim Man can also go into cardiac arrest and reacts to defibrillation. It is hoped that he will help dentists avoid unnecessary deaths, which may be caused by an allergic reaction to certain dental medications and stress related heart failures.
