Queen’s University teaching status is at risk

Queen’s University Belfast is at risk of losing its teaching status after concerns were raised about the quality of teaching and the availability of resources.

Queen’s is the only teaching school in Northern Ireland and the university is currently at the centre of an official investigation. If the General Dental Council is not satisfied with the results of the investigation the university may lose its teaching status.

Just three years ago Queen’s was named the best course in the Times Good University Guide but the GDC has called the quality of teaching and the level of resources provided for dental students into question. The GDC wrote to the vice chancellor of the university and the university is now awaiting the results of the inspection.

The investigation comes as Queen’s is making 11 million pounds worth of savings; 200 jobs at the university have also been lost.

Jim Wells, deputy chair of the Stormont health committee, said that it was very disappointing to hear news of the inspection; he went on to say that the closure of the dental school would be a disaster.
