Progress of ‘Eco-Dentistry’ in 2010 International Year of Biodiversity

Sample News Big

An environmentally-friendly dentistry industry is on the rise according to the Canadian Dental Association’s 2009 publication “Eco-friendly Dentistry: Not a matter of choice.” The aim of eco-dentistry is to practice environmental awareness and sustainability in dental patient care that conserves resources and energy, uses low volatile chemicals and reduces harmful environmental waste effects.

Due to this rise in eco-dentistry, more “green” dental products, devices, and processes are being developed for sustainability, such as sterilisation programmes allowing for reuse of materials; recycling autoclave bags; using digital radiography to replace film x-rays; introducing dry dental vacuum pumps instead of using water-based ones; using natural surface disinfectants; including biodegradable materials where possible; avoiding use of disposables; replacing traditional equipment with energy-star rated devices; using fluorescent lighting and LCD monitors; painting with VOC products and using environmentally-conscious suppliers and services.

Eco-friendly practice also contributes to the wellbeing of all those in the dentistry environment and involves the participation of the dental team and patients. However, some critics express concern over celebrity use of expos like the Go Green Expo held in New York City March 19 – 21, 2010, for self-promotion, such as the Lohan Green Toothbrush. Organisations like the Eco-Dentistry Association strive to establish green dental practice standards to support dentistry professionals in transition to environmentally-friendly dentistry. 2010 Celebrates the International Year of Biodiversity. How will the dental profession measure the health of their “eco” systems this year?
