President Joe Biden was forced to miss an event and reschedule a meeting with the NATO General Secretary to undergo root canal treatment on Monday 12th June.

The president complained of dental pain on Sunday 11th and was examined by the presidential dental team. He had X-rays and an initial root canal procedure, which was completed on Monday 11th after Mr Biden experienced further pain when he woke up.

White House physician, Dr Kevin O’Connor, said that the president required treatment on tooth 29, the lower right molar. The procedure was carried out by the presidential dental team, which comprises professionals from the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Mr Biden was treated in the White House Dental Operatory.

President Biden was due to attend an event, which recognized college athletes and he also had to reschedule a meeting with NATO General Secretary, Jens Stoltenberg. The meeting was moved from Monday 12th to Tuesday 13th June.

The White House confirmed that Mr Biden was not put under anaesthesia during the procedure. This is significant because it means that the 25th Amendment of the Constitution was not implemented. If the procedure was conducted under anaesthesia, the president’s powers and authorities would have temporarily passed to the vice president. This happened in 2021 when Mr Biden underwent a colonoscopy and presidential powers and duties were transferred to Vice-President Kamala Harris.
