Prescription charges may be reintroduced to fund dental care in Jersey
A senator in Jersey is pushing for the reintroduction of prescription charges to fund dental and medical care for people on a low income.
Senator Alan Breckon said that the money raised from prescription charges would be used to help low earners pay for medical care and assist the less well-off with dental costs. Financial help will also be given towards chiropody and eye care for individuals on a low income.
Prescription charges were scrapped in Jersey in February 2008 but Senator Breckon is keen for the charges to be restored; he is also calling for increased contributions towards social security payouts for the vulnerable.
Senator Breckon’s proposals will now be considered by the States and a decision will be announced in due course.
