A dentist who has spent more than 50 years caring for patients in Potters Bar, London, has finally downed his dental drill; Harry Olmer retired last week at the age of 86 years old.

Harry is the former owner of Selbourne Dental Practice in Potters Bar and on Friday he downed his instruments for the last time, after spending five decades tending to his patient’s dental woes. The 86 year old is now looking forward to swimming, playing bridge and enjoying country walks in his retirement and he is also relishing the opportunity to spend more time with his family, but admitted that he will miss his patients and the dental team and said that he had absolutely loved working as a dentist.

Dr Olmer was born in Poland and survived five concentration camps during the 2nd World War; he was one of 1,000 orphans to be invited to live in Great Britain. He went on to study dentistry at GlasgowUniversity and moved to Mill Hill in 1956 with his wife Margaret; this was also the year he bought Selbourne Dental Practice and he has been there ever since. Dr Olmer has always had a strong work ethic and he only cut down his hours in 2013, working two days a week for the last 12 months of his career.

Dr Olmer said that it had been an honour to get to know many of the patients and in many cases, different generations of the same family; he said of his time at the practice, “this place has given me a lot of laughs over the years. I will miss every second of it.”
