Portsmouth patients in limbo as dental practice sale delayed

Patients in Portsmouth have been left in limbo after the sale of a city centre practice stalled.

The mydentist practice in Kingston Crescent in the North End part of the city was due to be sold to Astradent, but there has been a delay. Patients at the practice were informed of the impending deal in March. A statement from mydentist suggested that patients would not be affected by the transition to Astradent. However, the sale has stalled, leaving patients without access to services since mydentist closed in May.

Patients who previously attended the mydentist clinic in Kingston Crescent were expecting to be able to access NHS services as normal once the acquisition was completed but many are now facing uncertainty. The practice closed in May and the new provider has not yet taken over, leaving hundreds of people in limbo.
A spokesperson for mydentist insisted that the sale had not fallen through and suggested that it should be completed “very soon.” Patients who were on the mydentist list will be automatically transferred to the new provider.

The company informed patients that they would be able to access urgent care at other mydentist clinics in the region, but many have disputed this, indicating that they were told to call NHS 111 as no appointments were available to them.

One patient, a 36-year-old police officer from Stamshaw, said that he had been “fobbed off” by mydentist. He tried to get an appointment in May but was unable to, as the Kingston Crescent surgery had closed. He was advised to contact other mydentist practices, which were unable to help and has suffered “the worst pain” of his life in recent weeks after cracking a filling. He was told that he would be on the urgent list when Astradent took over the practice but there is currently no information for patients who are waiting for treatment. He described the situation as “abysmal.”
