A dentist from Redcar has retired, over 30 years after taking the reins of the family business from his father.

Richard Elston took over Coatham Dental Practice in 1987. His father, Colin, had run the business since 1959 with his wife, Elizabeth, who worked as a receptionist.

Richard has now retired after a hugely successful 35 year career in dentistry, which involved managing practices in Redcar, Skelton and Grangetown. The business was known for providing high standards of care and offering opportunities for hundreds of local young people to work in dentistry.

At the age of 59, Richard said that it had been an honour to provide dental care to local people for over three decades and to build on the successes his father enjoyed. He paid tribute to his mother and father, who laid the foundations and added that he was “more than happy to continue” running the practice when his father handed over the keys in 1987. Between them, the dentists treated patients in the region for more than 60 years.

Richard thanked his colleagues and patients at the practices for their kind wishes and generous gifts and said that he would miss everyone, despite looking forward to taking a break. During his retirement, he plans to spend more time with his family and is considering buying a property to do up and enjoy overseas.
