Polluting dentist forced to pay $100k

A Philadelphia dentist who dumped his surgical waste along a local beach has been fined $100,000.

Dr Thomas W McFarland Jr, from Wynnewood, was also be put on probation after he was found guilty of dispensing of used syrgical needles along Avalon Waterway and fouling beaches in August 2008.

He was lucky not have spent time behind bars for a crime which can lead to up to five years in prison.

Dr McFarland admitted that he had taken a small boat out on the waterway, near Townsend inlet, and

threw a bag of surgical waste overboard.

The bag was discovered on 24 August 2010. It contained 260 needles, 180 swabs, lots of used blue and white filling capsules and some other items.
