A man from Plymouth has thanked his dentist for saving his life after he was diagnosed with cancer following a routine check-up.

John Sanders went to the dentist for a regular check-up, but was advised to have further tests after his dentist, Jasleen Batra, spotted swelling in his neck. John was referred to Derriford Hospital after the appointment and following further tests was diagnosed with cancer. John’s cancer originated in the tonsils and he was advised to start treatment immediately.

After undergoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy, John was told recently that he has a “very, very good” chance of survival.

John had attended a regular check at Peninsula Dental School when he was advised to go for further tests. During the appointment, Ms Batra, a trainee dentist, found that John’s lymph gland was swollen and very hard and she encouraged him to visit the hospital for investigations. Thankfully, her actions meant that John was diagnosed and treated quickly, which dramatically improved his chances of survival.

Speaking during an interview on BBC Radio Devon, John thanked Ms Batra and said that she had saved his life. He added that he had been fortunate and if it wasn’t for her, the outcome could have been very different.

Ms Batra said that she was simply doing her job, but stressed that John’s story highlights the importance of regular checks and seeing a doctor or dentist if there are any changes in the mouth or throat. Oral cancer is increasingly common, but many people are still unaware of the symptoms, and this means that most cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage.

In addition to attending routine checks, which include oral cancer screening, Ms Batra also encouraged patients to look out for signs at home. Common symptoms include abnormal lumps and swelling in the mouth or throat, difficulty swallowing, slow-healing mouth ulcers and red or white patches in the mouth.
