Second year dental students at Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry have donated £150 to a local charity, which helps adults with learning disabilities, after being awarded the annual Rayna DiModica Contribution to Society Award.

The students decided to give the money they received as a result of winning the award to the Plymouth Highbury Trust, which supports adults with learning disabilities; the students have been helping out at the charity to promote good oral health and educate people about oral hygiene and diet.

The university also invited some people cared for by the charity to visit the Dental Education facility, which is located in Devonport; the visit aimed to break down some of the barriers and tackle some of the issues, which make it difficult for people with learning disabilities to visit a dentist on a regular basis.

The charity was very grateful for the donation and also for the work the students do, which makes a big difference to people who may otherwise struggle with dental health.
