A dental student from Plymouth’s Peninsula Dental School has been crowned top of the class in a regional heat of a national dental competition. Jack Colclough has successfully made it through to the next round of the Dental Skills Competition, which is run by the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.

Jack, 25, was crowned the winner of the Peninsula heat and will now compete in the next round in Edinburgh. The first stage of the competition involves a series of complex practical tasks in which the candidates must demonstrate composure and attention to detail in addition to their dental expertise. There are 16 heats and the winner from each dental school goes through to compete at the final, which will take place on March 10th.

In the first heat, Jack was required to tend to a mouth mould and prepare an incisor for crown and he was judged the best competitor. Afterwards, he said he was shocked but honoured to win and he is now looking forward to representing Peninsula at the final next year. He was awarded a travel and accommodation package, a certificate and a trophy.

In the final, the competitors will be required to complete a series of challenges and the winner will be revealed at the Grand Final Dinner.
