Plans to relocate Bristol University’s dental school have been given the green light.

The university submitted a change of use application for 1, Trinity Quay. The premises were previously used by NatWest. Plans to change offices into institutional facilities have now been approved by Bristol City Council.

The new site would provide “future-fit” teaching, learning and research facilities, according to the statement accompanying the application. Trinity Quay is part of the Temple Quarter Enterprise Zone, which is located near the university’s proposed Enterprise Campus.

The dental school is currently based at the University of Bristol Dental Hospital. Design practice BDP carried out the feasibility study for the new site and will also be involved in designing the new facility.

Architecture director, Akshay Khera, said that there were challenges ahead but the project was also an “exciting” opportunity. As well as providing first-class facilities for students, the development will also be a “beneficial addition” to the area, Mr Khera added.

Initial plans for the building feature a statement-making living wall in the atrium and proposals to introduce green travel schemes to reduce carbon emissions by encouraging cycling, walking and the use of public transport.

Dean of the faculty of health sciences, Professor Jane Norman, said that it was an exciting time for the university and the department after a long time looking for suitable premises for a new dental school.

The facility enjoys a central location, which is beneficial for access and the provision of free dental care to local communities.
