Plans to extend Norfolk dental practice get the green light

Plans to extend a dental practice in Norfolk have been given the green light.

South Norfolk Council has approved plans submitted by the owner of Mulbarton Dental Surgery. The surgery, which is located off Mulbarton Common, is a private practice.

Now that planning permission has been granted, work can begin on adding a single-storey extension at the rear of the property, which will add two new treatment rooms. The development will provide more space for the team, enabling dentists to treat more patients.

News of the project has been welcomed by patients and some local residents, with parts of Norfolk and the surrounding counties labelled ‘dental deserts’ due to a lack of access to dental services. Research conducted by the Association of Dental Groups (ADG) revealed that Norfolk and Waveney was one of the most significant ‘dental deserts’ in the country, with one dentist to every 2,600 patients. A 2022 report showed that 36% of adults and 34.9% of children had seen a dentist within the previous 24 months.

Mulbarton Dental Surgery provided NHS services but stopped in 2021, switching to private care due to increased running costs and bureaucracy.

The plans to extend the practice have been approved on the condition that work on the extension starts by June 2026.
