Plans to convert offices into a private dental school have been submitted to Leicester City Council.

A planning application has been submitted to turn four floors of offices in the Blue Tower building in Leicester into a private dental school. The application has been compiled by architecture firm, RG + P on behalf of Blue Tower Property Ltd.

Details of the proposals are being kept secret at the moment but a city centre financial company has confirmed that it is working with a client on plans to open a private dental academy in St George’s Tower. Naren Naik, from Bankfield Financial Advisers, said that Leicester had been identified as a possible site for the school along with two other cities. The firm has pinpointed three possible locations in Leicester and are working on plans. A decision is set to be made in spring 2012.

Ted Cassidy, assistant mayor for economic development, said that the conversion could be a “very interesting” use of the current office space and added that he would welcome plans to create new jobs.

Councillor Neil Clayton said that a dental school would be a good use of the space providing that it did not contribute to congestion due to its central location.

The General Dental Council has not received any formal inquiries about a new dental school opening in Leicester.

The proposed site has planning permission for offices over four storeys and shops and entertainment and leisure outlets on the ground floor.
