Plans have been submitted to convert a Maryport pub into a new dental practice.

The owners of J M Stevenson, the practice next to Maryport hospital, have made a bid to convert McMenamin’s Cafe Bar on Irish Street into a new dental practice. McMenamin’s has been empty since 2009; the bar was opened in 2006 by local businessman Matty Todd; initially the pub did very well and even won awards but the recession signalled the downfall of the business and it finally closed in July 2009.

Practice manager at J M Stevenson, Dr Donald Stevenson, confirmed that the owners had applied for planning permission to see if it would be possible to convert the bar into a dental surgery; the plans have not yet been approved and Dr Stevenson said that they will wait until they hear back from the council before revealing plans and details about the conversion.

The opening of a new dental practice will improve access to local dental services in Maryport; the new practice will enable Maryport residents to register with a dentist on their doorstep.
