Plans have been revealed to create a new oral cancer speciality centre at the Government Dental College in Mumbai.

In July, Ajit Pawar, state finance minister, announced a grant to re-vamp the college and proposals for a new oral cancer centre have been drawn up with the funding in mind; the plans will be submitted to the medical education department at Mantralaya over the course of the next few weeks. A host of specialists, including four oncologists, four plastic surgeons, two oral maxillofacial surgeons, four anaesthetists and one ENT specialist will work at the facility.

The Government Dental College identifies an average of eight cases of oral cancer per month and more than one million people are diagnosed with the disease in India every year. At the moment, the college is only able to detect signs of cancer and then patients must be referred to private hospitals, but the new centre would enable patients to be treated at the college, which is funded by the state.

Dr Mansingh Pawar, dean of the Government Dental College in Mumbai, said that the plan is to equip the surgeons working at the college with the necessary skills and training to provide specialist oral cancer care.
