Plans for new dental practice hang in the balance

Plans for a new dental practice in Devon are hanging in the balance following criticism from the Environment Agency and conservation experts.

The new surgery, which was due to be built in the town of Ottery, may not be built after all after plans were labelled ‘unacceptable’ by the Environmental Agency. Conservation and environment experts said the proposed site was susceptible to flooding and posed threats to the surrounding environment.

The new surgery was supposed to be a means of expanding NHS dental provision in the local area; the current surgery in Ottery is full and cannot treat any more patients. The new practice would be able to take on around two thousand new patients and would make NHS dental care much more accessible to local patients; a new practice would also prevent waiting lists in the area and enable patients to receive the treatment they need quickly.

The plans are now being considered by East Devon District Council and a decision will be made in the coming months.
