Plans to build a new dental hospital and a school of dentistry on the former BBC Pebble Mill site have been given the green light.

Birmingham City Council has given planning permission for the development, which will be managed by Birmingham Community Health Trust in conjunction with the University of Birmingham, Calthorpe Estate and Birmingham and Solihull LIFT.

The proposals include plans to build a new dental hospital and a new school of dentistry for the University of Birmingham. The hospital would provide the same range of services as those currently provided at the site on Whithall Street but patients and staff will benefit from a state-of-the-art building and facilities.

The proposals were shared with residents and students at three public exhibitions, which were held over the summer, to enable people to see how the sites would work, what kinds of services they would be provided and how they would be accessed.

The designs for the new buildings were drawn up by healthcare specialists, Creative Environments Ltd and further consultations will be held in the coming weeks with students, staff and local residents.

Rick Roberts, medical director of Birmingham Community Healthcare Trust, said that the trust was committed to delivering first class health services and everyone is delighted that the proposals have been approved.
