Plans to open a new dental practice in Ryde, Isle of Wight, have been submitted.

Dr Darko Iloski, who is currently a dentist with Bupa Dental Care and the Sandown Dental practice, has applied to change the use of the former youth and community centre on Ryde High Street. The goal is to open a new dental practice, which would provide easy access to residents in the heart of the town.

The building has been vacant for a long time, despite several attempts to sell it or find a tenant. At present, there is a children’s nursery on the ground floor, which would remain in place. The plans outline proposals to create a new floor in the upper part of the premises, which used to be a church. A platform lift would be fitted to enhance accessibility for disabled users and those with restricted mobility.

The development would create nine treatment rooms, a new reception and waiting area, a sterilisation room, a staff room and a large office.

In a statement accompanying the application, the planning agents representing Dr Iloski, Nova Architectural, said that the facility was much needed and would provide a critical service for local residents.

Access to dental services has become a subject of ongoing discussion and debate on the island in recent years, with practices closing, dentists leaving the NHS and patients finding it increasingly difficult to get appointments.
