Plans to build a brand new dental clinic in Swindon have been given the green light.

Planning officers have approved an application from the owners of Mayhew Dental, which is located at the end of Covingham Drive. The existing building will be demolished alongside a single-storey unit, which was previously used as a physiotherapy clinic. A new three-storey building will be constructed on the site.

The new building, which will overlook Dorcan Way, will house the dental practice on the ground floor and a selection of apartments on the first and second floors. There will be twelve in total, including eight 1-bedroom flats and four 2-bedroom apartments.

In a statement accompanying the application, representatives from Mayhew Dental suggested that the existing premises were no longer viable. Modernising the practice by relocating to a new building would enable the business to develop and expand, the owners elaborated.

Now that the project has been approved, work will start on the site. The practice will comprise two waiting areas, large, accessible toilets, male and female changing rooms for staff, a staff room and a spacious area for the team to host meetings and enjoy lunch together. The treatment rooms will be bright and modern with easy access for patients who have restricted mobility.

A report by Swindon Borough Council indicated that the development would “make a positive contribution to the borough’s housing stock” and “improve the level of available community services.”

The owners of Mayhew Dental had originally planned to convert the former physio clinic into new and improved practice space. However, the pandemic forced the team to rethink their plans.
