Plans to convert a former pub in Leicestershire into a GP surgery, flats, shops and a dental suite have been revealed.

Dr Rohit Sahdev bought The Rutland Arms pub in Aylestone with a view to converting the vacant building into a GP surgery, a dental suite and seven flats and there are also plans to open a small number of shops.

Plans for the surgery have divided public opinion but officers at Leicester City Council are encouraging members of the planning committee to vote in favour of the conversion at a meeting next Tuesday.

Dr Sahdev said that he is hopeful that the committee will support his application, after he launched a petition, which has been signed by 765 local residents and claimed that the current Aylestone Surgery is “unfit for purpose.”

However, Dr Sahdev’s plans have not been welcomed by everyone and the council has received 18 letters of objection, with some local people saying that the new building will increase congestion and cause problems with parking. Some people have also said that the building design is “bleak and brutal” and does not fit in with the surroundings.
