A petrol bomb has caused thousands of pounds worth of damage at a family dental practice in Gateshead.

Arsonists targeted the Newbiggin Villa Family Dental Clinic, which is located in Low Fell, twice in one week; the second time, a petrol bomb was thrown through the window, causing severe damage, which has been estimated at around £90,000. The first attack took place on Saturday April 20th, but the damage was minor and staff members worked over the weekend to get the surgery ready to open on Monday morning. The second attack took place on the following Wednesday and the damage was much more extensive.

Practice coordinator, Sue Mulholland, expressed disbelief that anyone would want to cause damage to the premises. The downstairs rooms have been gutted and dentists are operating from the upstairs rooms.

Northumberland Police are now searching for clues and they are particularly interested in hearing from the caller who reported the first incident; Detective Constable Caroline Armstrong, said that somebody called to report the first attack and they have urged that person to get back in touch; they are also eager to talk to a young male who was seen on a moped with no lights who stopped to call the police but then drove away before they reached the scene.

Anyone who has any information at all is advised to contact Northumbria officers on 101 (extension 69191) or call the Crimestoppers line anonymously on 0800 555 111.
