Pet Dental Health Under the Spotlight in the USA

Sample News Big

Pet dental health has taken centre stage in the USA with the launch of Pet Dental Health Month, which will run throughout February.

The campaign is designed to promote pet oral health and educate pet owners about taking care of their pet’s teeth and gums. A series of events will take place across the country over the course of the next few weeks, with vets offering educational sessions for owners and dental checks for dogs and cats.

According to figures from Banfield Pet Hospitals, oral health diseases are rife among pets in America and in 2010, 89 percent of dogs and 83 percent of cats over the age of 3 years old suffered from signs of decay.

Jan Bellows, a veterinary dentist and president of the American Veterinary Dental College, said that brushing pets’ teeth can be a frustrating experience but it is very important.

Many pet owners may be unaware that they need to keep an eye on their pet’s oral health and vets are eager to encourage owners to take their pets for regular dental checks and take steps to prevent oral health diseases, such as cleaning their pet’s teeth, giving them specially designed chews and using pet toothpaste.
