The Pedal Power campaign, a campaign aimed to encourage more people to cycle and reap the benefits of life in the saddle, has inspired a Cheshire dentist to take on a gruelling challenge for charity.

Dentist Anthony McGarr, from Daresbury, and his friend, Mike Harper, have decided to take on a 215 mile cycle challenge to raise money for good causes. The pair will endeavour to complete the Trans Pennine Trail, setting from Southport on the coast of the Irish Sea and finishing in Hornsea, on the North Sea Coast. The route takes in all kinds of terrain, including mountainous tracks and rolling hills and the pair will need to be at their best to complete it; 70 per cent of the route is off-road and there is a 7560 foot ascent along the way.

The pair plans to leave on May 2nd with the estimated completion date the 6th May.

Mike, a company director from Knutsford, became a cycling enthusiast after turning 40 but he has had a serious injury and has not cycled on a regular basis for a long time following reconstructive knee surgery. Anthony, who works at The Dental Academy in Daresbury, has only just taken up the sport, so the route is a massive challenge for the duo.

Mike and Anthony are hoping to raise £2,000 for Cancer Research UK and anyone who would like to donate to the cause is encouraged to visit justgiving.com/boysgonebiking.
