Oxford dental clinic uses LED ceiling screens to soothe nervous patients

A dental clinic in Witney, Oxfordshire, is using giant LED ceiling screens to soothe nervous patients.

Patients who attend Witney Dental Clinic can choose to gaze upon scenes depicting blue skies, clouds and hot air balloons, underwater creatures or trees while they undergo dental treatment. One treatment room has an LED screen showing the sky while the other consultation room has a screen offering a choice of scenes ranging from under the sea to forests and glades.

Many people feel anxious when they go to the dentist, particularly if they haven’t been for a long time or they need treatment, such as a filling, crown, root canal therapy or tooth extraction. The screens provide a welcome distraction and they can help nervous patients to relax and unwind during their time in the chair.

The screens were funded by Oxford Health Charity. Feedback suggests that they have a very positive impact, especially for children. The clinic specialises in treating patients who can’t attend regular high street practices, many of whom find a trip to the dentist difficult and distressing. Staring at the screens can help to ease anxiety and transport the individual away from the dental chair.

Senior dental officer at Oxford Health, Puja Kalawadia, hailed the addition of the screens as a major success and said that patients have responded incredibly positively. She added that one patient wouldn’t even get into the chair before the screens were added and their experience was changed entirely by being able to watch the scenes. Reducing anxiety among patients plays a crucial role in encouraging people to attend regular appointments and ensuring they feel comfortable if they need treatment.
