Oxford County Children to Benefit from Free Dental Clinic

Babies and toddlers from Oxford County will be invited to attend a free dental screening clinic on June 14th, it has been confirmed.

Representatives from Oxford County public health and emergency services will host the free screening clinic between 9am and 4pm at the Community Dental Services dental clinic on Graham Street.

The clinic is aimed at children who have not seen a dentist before and organisers are eager to talk to parents about the benefits of good oral health and the dangers associated with poor oral hygiene. Oral hygiene should be an important part of the daily routine from a very early age and parents can protect their child’s teeth before they even erupt by using wipes to gently clean the gums.

Many parents do not take their children to the dentist until they start school but dentists recommend taking children from the age of 12 months so that they can get used to going to the dentist and the dentist can keep an eye on the child’s developing teeth.

Members of staff from the clinic will screen babies and toddlers to check the development of the teeth and check for abnormalities with the palate and soft tissue. They will also assess the risk of tooth decay and talk to parents about oral hygiene.

Allison Wilks, a public health dental hygienist, said that the clinic is a great opportunity for parents of young children to get their children’s teeth checked out. Members of the team will also be on hand to ask questions and talk to parents about bottle feeding, pacifiers and thumb sucking.
