Otley dental practice switches to private dental care

A dental practice in Otley has switched to private dental care, leaving many residents without access to NHS services.

A statement issued by Manor Square Dental Practice suggests that there is no way of keeping the practice running as an NHS provider due to rising costs and a lack of funding for NHS dentistry by governments over the last decade.

In a letter to patients, the owners of the practice said that it had been a very difficult decision to go private but there was no other option to ensure the future of the clinic. In the letter, the team stated that they were aware that the news would be met with disappointment but insisted that the clinic will continue to deliver high standards of dental care at the most affordable prices possible.

NHS services will stop on August 31st. Patients affected by the move have been informed, including those who have children registered with the practice. Residents who wish to stay on as private patients can pay per visit or sign up to a membership plan, which is designed to help individuals to spread the cost of treatment.

News of the changes has prompted patients and local councillors to raise concerns over the accessibility and affordability of dental care in Otley. Cllr Sandy Lay, from the Liberal Democrats, said that many people cannot afford private dentistry, especially at a time when the cost of living is so high. He called for urgent action from the government to support NHS dentistry and ensure that local people can access the treatment they need via the NHS.
