A graduate from Oswestry has plenty to smile about after becoming the UK’s youngest clinical dental technician. Sheena Lakhanpal has successfully completed a 2-year course at the University of Central Lancashire, making her the youngest qualified dental technician at the age of 27 years old.

Ms Lakhanpal, who works at Bupa Dental Care’s laboratory in Oswestry, graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2014 and went on to gain valuable experience working at the Oswestry Laboratory. She then embarked on the course at the University of Central Lancashire, emerging as one of a handful of candidates to certify in 2019.

The qualification enables Ms Lakhanpal to provide a diverse range of services, including working directly with patients to carry out denture fitting and repairs. Certification represents advanced clinical and technical skills, and demonstrates that Ms Lakhanpal is able to cater for the individual and specific requirements of different patients.

Speaking about her achievements, Ms Lakhanpal said that the work of a dental technician can have a dramatic impact on quality of life and wellbeing, and this is why it was so important for her to take up part-time studies to advance her career. The course has been tough and challenging, and the qualification is difficult to obtain, but it has been worthwhile. Having completed advanced training, Sheena is now looking forward to putting her skills into action and spending more time with patients and colleagues in Oswestry again.
