Orthodontist shares dos and don’ts for better oral health

A leading orthodontist has shared some dos and don’ts for patients in the run-up to Christmas.

Dr Khaled Kasem, chief orthodontist at Impress, encouraged patients to follow some simple rules to enjoy better oral health. One of the most important steps, he explained, was to allow the teeth to remineralise after eating and drinking before brushing the teeth. Eating and drinking sugary and acidic foods causes bacteria in the mouth to release acids, which weaken the enamel. The teeth need time to remineralise. Brushing while the enamel is still soft can cause damage. It’s best to wait at least 30 minutes and to limit snacking and drinking acidic drinks between meals.

Dr Kasem also laid out some basic courtesy points for patients who are going to the dentist. Before an appointment, it’s beneficial to clean the teeth and avoid smoking and eating anything with a strong or pungent odour. It’s also important to limit the consumption of coffee, tea and drinks like cola, which can stain the teeth, and juices, which are very acidic.

Many people will be aware of the dangers of drinking fizzy drinks, but Dr Kasem also highlighted acidic juices and products that are laden with sugar that are marketed as healthy alternatives to soda, such as shop-bought smoothies. Research also shows that some of the most popular festive hot drinks available contain more sugar than fizzy drinks. Sugary drinks and acidic beverages accelerate enamel wear, increasing the risk of cavities and tooth sensitivity.

During the festive season, dental experts have urged the public to enjoy edible treats and festive tipples but to bear their teeth and gums in mind. Limiting snacking, avoiding acidic drinks and moderating sugar intake can help to lower the risk of dental dramas.
