An orthodontist from Norwich, Connecticut has been praised for his aid work in Haiti.

Dr Jeremiah Lowney Jr has been given the prestigious 2010 District One Distinguished Service Award by the International College of Dentists. Dr Lowney has been working to improve dental care in Haiti for over twenty years now a nd he founded the Haitian Health Foundation in 1992.

Dr Lowney’s work in Haiti has been hailed as ‘inspirational by fellow dental professionals and both dental and gener

al health institutions; consequently, in addition to the award given to the orthodontist, organisations including the Connecticut State Dental Association, the Connecticut State Dental Foundation and the Connecticut Dental Political Action Committee have pledged a total of twenty thousand pounds to the Haitian Health Foundation.

Dr Lowney said he was honoured to receive the award but stressed there is still a great deal to be done in Haiti, especially in light of the recent earthquake that has claimed hundreds of lives and left millions without access to basic services, food and shelter. Even before the earthquake hit, the people of Haiti lived in some of the most difficult conditions in the world, with poverty and disease rife in the country. By establishing the Haitian Health Foundation, Dr Lowney was able to help thousands of people and is looking forward to helping thousands more in the future.
