The Oxford Oral Health Promotion team came up with a novel approach to promote National Smile Month, by jumping on board a bus.

The Oral Health Bus toured villages and towns in Oxfordshire to promote National Smile Month and raise awareness of oral health. The bus, which was funded by Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, visited Banbury, Didcot and Abingdon, to talk to local people about oral hygiene, dental services and the importance of seeing a dentist on a regular basis.

To celebrate this year’s theme, The Smile Factor, organisers Heather Duignan and Simon Mastrantone were joined by oral health promoters, Natalie Bass and Jo Daley and Andy Barlow and Wendy Marshall, from the Banbury clinical dental team. As well as talking to people about oral health and oral hygiene, the team also offered free dental checks aboard the bus.

The team saw more than 200 people on the bus tour and carried out more than 60 oral health checks over a two day period.

Simon Mastrantone said that the bus tour was a great success and that people were interested to see what was going on when the bus rolled into town and members of the oral health promotion team were able to interact with local people and offer them free dental checks and goody bags.
