Two dental schools have been boosted by funding worth £132,000, for oral health research.

The sum will be given to the universities of Dundee and Glasgow for dental research and the schools will focus their studies on inequalities in oral health services. The schools will also research oral cancer and birth defects associated with dental problems, such as a cleft lip and palate.

The Scottish Funding Council will provide the money and researchers will work alongside dental professionals and representatives from the Scottish Dental Practice Based Research Network, to ensure that the findings are put into practice to make access to oral health services better in Scotland.

Mark Batho, chief executive of the Scottish Funding Council, said that the funding will strengthen the partnership between the two universities and enable them to work more efficiently. He added that the research will provide important information, which will be used to improve dental services in Scotland.

Professor Mark Hector, dean of dentistry at the University of Dundee, said that the money will enable the two universities to work more effectively together to find solutions for existing problems with access to dental services.
