Olympic Dentists and Doctors Shocked by Training Programme

Dentists and doctors who successfully passed a rigorous selection programme to join the Olympic medical team were left shocked when part of their training programme included a session devoted to prescribing paracetamol.

The highly trained team of professionals, which includes GPs, dentists, nurses and surgeons, was forced to sit through a training session dedicated to prescribing the popular painkiller after clinic managers were told that they must have a prescribing policy in place for paracetamol and all staff should have the necessary training.

Tony Kilcoyne, a member of the General Dental Council and practising dentist, was one of the professionals who attended the training event on the 16th March. He described the session as “surreal” and said that everyone was shocked when the theme of the session was revealed. Mr Kilcoyne said that there was a sense of complete and utter surprise and said that you could have heard a pin drop in the room, as it is obvious that everyone is capable of prescribing paracetamol and some people found it insulting to their experience and expertise. Mr Kilcoyne did add that the clinician taking the session apologised in advance, stating that he had to carry out the session to meet with guidelines.

A spokesman for the London Organising Committee, said that it is policy to train all volunteers, regardless of whether or not they are familiar with the procedures.
