Old Pub to become new dental practice

Nestor Primecare, based in Birmingham, aim to renovate a derelict pub in Stoke into a new NHS dental practice. Plans have been put forward by the group to turn the New Phoenix pub into four dental surgeries, with full sterilisation facilities. The application for planning has been sent to the Stoke-on-Trent City Council, and they have come due to a shortage of dentists in the area.

The New Phoenix pub has been empty for a number of years and local residents have welcomed the plans; ‘Anything is better than an empty building. I imagine it’s quite a big building inside and would make a nice dentists.’

Pauline Johnson, Community Voice councillor for Stoke and Trent Vale, believes that the town would benefit from a new dentist, as there are not enough services for locals. She also claims the investment would benefit the town as a whole; ‘A lot of dentists we’ve got tend to be in old terraced houses and it’s difficult for people to get upstairs,’ she said. ‘I’d say this is a good move. There’s a couple of car parks nearby as well where people will be able to leave their cars.’

Although not supported by all the local residents, the application submitted to the council states the renovation will be completed in “sympathy” with the surrounding area, and that it has the “support of the local NHS Primary Care Trust.”
