The number of dental nurses working for the NHS in Scotland has increased by 65 per cent in the last five years, according to the latest figures.

New figures also revealed that the number of dental technicians has increased by 171 per cent in the same time period.

SNP MSP Bob Doris said that the new figures show the commitment of the NHS to improve access to dental care and standards of oral health in Scotland. He added that there are now many more dental nurses and dental technicians working for the NHS in Scotland compared to when the Labour government was in power and this shows a significant improvement in the provision of dental care.

Mr Doris said that many of the areas that had lengthy waiting lists under the Labour government now have much better access to NHS dental care.

Recent figures have also shown that record numbers of children in Primary One have no symptoms of decay and for the first time ever, all 14 health boards hit their target of 60 per cent of children without decay.

Figures released by the government show that the number of dental nurses has increased from 862 nurses in 2007 to 1426 in 2012, while the number of technicians has increased from 48 technicians in 2007 to 130 in 2012.
