A mother-of-two from Norwich has shared her experiences of trying to access dental care after breaking her tooth at the start of the year.

Claire Angelina broke her tooth in February but was unable to find a dentist willing to offer her an appointment, despite calling all the practices in the area. By March, Claire’s situation had got worse and she started to develop shooting pain in her face, which wasn’t getting better with over the counter medication. Desperate for help, Claire called NHS 111 and they advised her to contact an emergency dental service.

Claire couldn’t get an urgent dental appointment and was still suffering with severe pain so she went to A&E at her local hospital in Norwich. At the time she was taking painkillers constantly. Staff at the hospital could only help with pain relief and advised her to see a dentist.

In April, Claire went to a private dentist. She couldn’t cope with the pain anymore and said that she was an “emotional wreck.” Talking about the experience, she said there “zero emergency care available” and added that she knew others who had been through the same ordeal.
